With regard to earth as the element to be overcome : The protagonist on having surmounted the inexorable challenges of the fire element girds up to circumvent the challenges of EARTH. A plateau confronts him in the middle of which is the coveted book. But the landscape is free of obstacles or traps of any kind. Seeing this let up of cruelty by fate he rushes onward overjoyed. Just when he is only a couple of yards from retrieving the journal the ground on which it rests shoots upward infinitely forming an unclimbable tower. And the landscape around him becomes a trap of terra firma consisting of platforms ,ladders, ledges and thorny impediments that the hero crosses to ultimately reach his goal. fate he rushes onward overjoyed.
