Will the Cell Phone Still Ring?

Someone stole my stepson's cell phone today. It's through T Mobile and we're working with them on it now. We have also been trying to call the number nonstop. Would the phone ring if they took the sim card out or what would happen? When we dial his number it rings like it should and eventually goes to voicemail.
